Collection of crochet mermaid dolls made with various yarns including Scheepjes Catona, Phildar Phil Douce, and Cheval Blanc Comète

Choosing the right yarn is essential for creating a beautiful crochet plushie. It impacts the softness, structure, final look—and even the joy of crocheting! Here’s a guide based on my experience and customer feedback to help you find the perfect yarn for your projects.

🧵 1. Mercerized Cotton: for crisp stitches and vibrant colors

Mercerized cotton is ideal for amigurumi and dolls with fine details. It gives great stitch definition and comes in a wide range of colors.

My recommendation:

Scheepjes Catona: Available in over 100 shades, this 100% cotton yarn is perfect for small characters and delicate features. It comes in 10g, 25g, and 50g skeins—perfect for multicolor projects!

Benefits:

  • Beautifully defined stitches
  • Huge color variety
  • Easy to work with—even for beginners

🧸 2. Chenille Yarn: for soft and cuddly plushies

Chenille yarn is perfect for plush toys with a velvety, super-soft feel. It’s especially loved for baby gifts or cuddly companions.

My recommendations:

  • DMC Happy Chenille: A soft, easy-to-use yarn ideal for small projects.
  • Phil Douce by Phildar: Great for soft doll hair, like in my Triskel designs.
  • Velvet Tricot (size 6): A chunkier yarn with a luxurious velvet finish—perfect for larger plushies.

Tips (to avoid stuffing showing through the stitches):

  • Use a hook that matches the yarn weight.
  • Watch your tension: If you crochet tightly, use the hook size recommended on the label. If you crochet loosely, go down one hook size.

🎨 3. Mixing Yarns for Unique Effects

Don’t be afraid to mix different types of yarns to create interesting textures! For example, use cotton for the body and a fun textured yarn for the hair (like curly wool or felted yarn).

Just make sure to use the same yarn type for the body and clothing if you want to avoid surprise sizing issues during fitting 😉

Tips:

  • Try out combinations on small swatches before starting your full project.
  • Make sure your yarns have similar wash instructions if your plushie might be cleaned later.

📝 4. My Patterns: Designed to Guide You

In all my patterns, I always include:

  • The type of yarn I used
  • The recommended hook size
  • Tips for adapting the pattern if you choose a different yarn

I’m always happy to answer your questions and help you pick the yarn that suits your project best!

🔑 5. In Summary

  • For precise details: go with mercerized cotton
  • For maximum softness: choose chenille yarn
  • For unique effects: mix different yarn types

Your yarn choice will depend on the look and feel you want, as well as who the plushie is for. Don’t be afraid to experiment—and feel free to contact me if you need personalized advice!
