Let me open up my tool kit! Whether you’re a total beginner or a seasoned crocheter, there are a few everyday items that make a big difference when it comes to enjoying your crochet time. Here are the essentials I keep close — some practical, some purely comforting… but all absolutely necessary in their own way.
🧶 My “magic” crochet hook (with a little sentimental value)
We all have that one favorite hook. Mine belonged to my grandmother. It’s been through countless projects, fits perfectly in my hand, and even though I’ve tried plenty of others, that one always feels right.
Tip: Try different brands if you’re just starting out — comfort varies a lot from one hook to another!
🧵 Stitch markers (lots of them. Seriously.)
They’re tiny, helpful… and they vanish at the worst possible time. I have them in every color, and yet they disappear like socks in the wash or Lego under the couch.
🧸 Polyfill stuffing (always in stock)
You never realize how much you’ll need — especially for larger projects or when using thick yarns like velvet or chenille.
But not all stuffing is created equal! I prefer recycled fiberfill: it’s easier to work with, holds its shape better, and doesn’t slide around like some super-slick synthetic ones. It makes for much more stable stuffing, especially in structured designs.
🌈 A rainbow of yarn (because you never know)
I keep yarn in dozens of shades. Still, with every new project, I find myself missing that one perfect color. So I always keep a stash — just in case.
Spoiler: You’ll still be missing one. It’s just part of the crochet life. 😅
🎒 A project bag
Mine was handmade by a super talented maker. It holds everything I need for my current project: hook, yarn, pattern, stitch markers, scissors… Though let’s be honest — my supplies still tend to take over the sofa.
☕ A cup of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate
Not essential, but highly recommended. There’s something magical about putting down your hook for a moment, taking a sip, admiring your progress… and picking it back up again.
It’s good for your eyes, hands, and soul.
🧵 Embroidery floss (lots of it)
Perfect for finishing touches, tiny details on clothing, faces, hearts, flowers… I always keep a variety on hand. A little contrast or shimmer can go a long way!
🧷 Buttons (and other small treasures)
They’re good for everything: closing a cardigan, decorating a skirt, adding flair to a tiny purse… I have a box full of them. One day I’ll organize it. Maybe.
🧲 A magnet for tracking needles (and saving butts)
True story: needles love hiding in the couch. A strong magnet is your best friend to find them fast — before someone finds them the hard way 😬
🌟 And most importantly… kindness toward yourself
Crocheting also means accepting that not everything will be perfect. Some days, you’ll undo more than you finish. Or change colors three times. That’s totally okay. What matters most is enjoying the process.
